ARTIST STATEMENT:
Art has been the anchor for me to sort through the times, places and people in my immediate world.
The creative process has always given me an outlet,
a safe place for an expression of me.
My focus in imagery has changed over the years. It has evolved, improved, not improved, improved again, changed again and is always in a state of“becoming”.
It's that journey of becoming that guides me into my studio, letting me experiment, play and trust the creative process to be a surprise worth finding.
My muses have been the people in my life, animals I have known, objects I have owned, forests that have given me peace and landscapes that make me feel alive-a part of everything, yet so small and insignificant at the same time.
I enjoy the play of color interactions, I enjoy building up the imagery in layers; both smooth and textured, and the ability to manipulate materials- either with paint, paper, collage or ink. It's that exquisite dance between the artist and the material that I thrive on in my art making experience.
My most recent endeavor is that of burying or covering up images using a variety of media.
I am sorting that artistically by making each individual artwork an archeological dig- what is hiding beneath the surface, making a complex composition that has harmony between the layers of materials that make each image unique.
Recently taking a workshop and learning Mokuhanga printing techniques and at the same time discovering the joy working with collage on my paintings, I have found that both of these mediums are the prefect vehicle to drive my burying, hiding, revealing and building up of "things" in my images.
It makes the surface visually exciting and the underneath, those subtle marks, tones and textures equally as exciting. They work together to make the image complete.
Finding that inner balance and outer expression is my quest as an artist.
